People v. Mark Manes.
Case# 99CR1108
On November 13, 1999, Mark Manes was sentenced to six years in prison for illegally selling a handgun to a minor (Klebold) and possessing a dangerous weapon (for firing the sawn-off shotgun as seen on the March 6, 1999 videotape from Rampart Range).
Controversies
Manes was said to have simply been a casual contact who sold Klebold the TEC-DC9M, whom Manes believed to be 18 years old, and that was the extent of their contact. However, in these files Manes admitted he knew Klebold was only 17 years old, but thought once he sold him the handgun it was "too late" to take it back. Manes took Harris and Klebold shooting together on three separate occasions, and took Klebold shooting on two additional occasions. Manes also purchased 9mm ammunition for Harris the night before the shooting on April 19, 1999.
Manes had a criminal history prior to selling the handgun to Klebold. He was arrested a total of 9 times (6 times as a juvenile) that resulted in 2 juvenile adjudications. He threatened another kid to a fight, vandalized the kid's parents' car, threatened to beat the kid up, and admittedly started selling drugs when he was just 16 years old. Prior to the Columbine shooting, Manes had amassed four misdemeanors, and faced a variety of charges including possession of drugs, possession of an illegal weapon, and had one traffic conviction. He was given probation for most of his crimes, including possession of a dangerous weapon. His lack of regard for the law caught up to him when he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for illegally selling Klebold the TEC-DC9M.
